Doug Ford’s Mixed Record on Ontario Housing Policy


Ontario Premier Doug Ford, in the run-up to the provincial election, is being scrutinized for his seven-year record on housing. His government set an ambitious target of building 1.5 million new homes in ten years and introduced initiatives such as funding the skilled trades, supporting mass timber construction, and launching infrastructure and municipal building funds. These moves have helped boost apprenticeship registrations and enabled some municipalities to exceed housing targets. However, the actual number of new homes built has fallen significantly short of projections, with criticisms mounting over the reliance on long-term care beds and student housing counts as new units and the continued lag behind other provinces in meeting housing demand.
